Artist Steve Morris has done the majority of his comics work for Dark Horse Comics, providing cover art for the “Whedonverse” titles, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel & Faith, Serenity, Dollhouse, and Spike.
I’m assuming that Mr. Morris was a fan of those Joss Whedon shows and characters, before ever getting hired as a regular cover artist for those books. I’ve seen other illustrators turn their personal fan-art into real career opportunity this same way. Babs Tarr is one that comes to mind. She went from being a regular at comics conventions, drawing her favorite superhero characters for fans, to actually being hired by DC to draw the monthly Batgirl comic. So, I guess the lesson to be learnt here is draw what you love and good things will happen!
Morris has also drawn covers for The Occultist, The Strain, and House of Night.
