1. What can you tell us about your new book, Woman World?
Woman World is a graphic novel set in a post-apocalyptic, no, “utopian” world in which men have gone extinct. It follows the daily lives and struggles of a group of women in a small village.
2. What’s your creative process like and what tools do you like to use?
My creative process is a lot of re-doing. I write a comic, and then re-write it, I draw a comic and then re-draw it. I like the ‘re’ part. The first part of the process for me is just getting something down on paper, something tangible, that I can then tear apart and re-do. Tools-wise I’m a sucker for post-it notes and markers. Post-it notes have a great discardable feel and markers stop me from focusing on the aesthetic. When I have an idea I’m willing to commit to, I’ll move over to photoshop for the final version.
3. Who or what has influenced your work the most?
A lot of my influences are from TV. Comedically, I do enjoy a well-crafted sitcom, I’m a fan of Parks and Rec, 30 Rock, Cheers, Seinfeld, Arrested Development and Community. I absolutely love that format, it’s accessible and fun – which has of course influenced the style of comics I create. My biggest comic-influence is “Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi.
4. Do you have any advice for aspiring artists/cartoonists?
My advice would be – make stuff. Just make it. And then make it again. And somewhere in there you’ll realize you’re not an aspiring artist, you’re an artist.
5. So, what are you working on next?
Oh no! Let me enjoy this part, I’m supposed to be reaping the rewards of a year of hard work! But I do have a few ideas of things I want to do next…
