Ted McKeever is one of the trailblazing artists to come out of the 1980’s “indy” comics scene. His unique, visually experimental style marries perfectly with his dark sense of humor. My first exposure to McKeever’s work was the funny and surreal 5 issue mini-series, Plastic Forks(Epic, 1990). Later, I’d discover earlier works like Eddy Current and Transit, which was nominated for multiple Eisner Awards in 1988.
McKeever has produced an impressive catalog of original comics over the last 25+ years, and he’s worked on projects with some of the best writers in the business, including Peter Milligan, Rachel Pollack, Keith Giffen, Joe Kelly, and Brian Michael Bendis.
This week marks the release of the concluding chapter to his latest series, the semi-autobiographical Pencil Head, which explores the ups & downs of working in the comics industry. Sadly, from reading a recent interview with the artist, it sounds like this will be his last comics work for quite some time(but, hopefully not forever!).
You can see the latest art, which is mostly a new series of 5″x5″ paintings featuring some of McKeever’s favorite characters, and what else he’s up to on his twitter feed here.
