One of the most influential artists of the last 30 years, Mike Mignola, is taking a 1 year break(at least) from comics after the final issue of Hellboy in Hell(top) releases this week.  Mignola might come back, but who knows?!  He’s going to focus on personal art projects, like paintings.  Hopefully, the time away will recharge his battery for comics, whether it’s more Hellboy, B.P.R.D. or something different.

What makes Mignola so special, and why Disney hired him as a concept artist for their 2001 film, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, is his simple, yet effective design, constructing compositions with basic shapes, shadows, and light.

Before dedicating most of his time to the Hellboy universe(which he created), Mignola was well established with the big publishers, working on notable books like Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, Cosmic Odyssey, Rocket Raccoon, and World of Krypton.  He worked as a concept artist for Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula(hey, just like our last CIotW!), and his own character, Hellboy, was adapted to film by director Guillermo del Toro.

You can follow Mignola during his year long sabbatical from comics right here!
