Jim Steranko is a comics legend, who like Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, and Neal Adams, helped to expand the horizons of mainstream graphic storytelling in the 60’s & 70’s. A fan of op art(AKA optical art),surrealist art, and spy films, Steranko constructed his pages in an exciting, dynamic way. His most well known comics work was in Marvel’s Strange Tales, Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D, Captain America, and a brief stint on X-Men, which he also redesigned the logo for.
After the early 70’s, Steranko got away from regular comics work and moved onto painting book covers(The Shadow), and book publishing, most notably his original illustrated crime novel, Chandler: Red Tide, and 2 volumes of the planned 6 volume series, The Steranko History of Comics. He’s also worked as a concept artist for such films as Raiders of the Lost Ark and Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula.
Currently, Marvel is publishing special Jim Steranko variant covers for some of their comics, including this week’s Steve Rogers: Captain America #1(top).
