This week we celebrate the art of Cliff Chiang, who illustrated this week’s cover to Ms. Marvel #3, as well as the “hip-hop” variants to Silver Surfer #1. After graduating from Harvard University with a joint degree in English Literature and Visual Arts, Chiang began his career as an assistant editor at DC Comics and started contributing art to various DC projects in the early 2000’s. One of my all-time favorites(and very underrated in my opinion) was his collaboration with writer Justin Hall on a re-imagining of Beware the Creeper(2003) for DC/Vertigo. Over his career, Chiang has worked with some of the biggest writers in the business, including Brian Azzarello, Peter Milligan, and Will Pfeiffer, to name a few.
In 2011 Cliff Chiang & Brian Azzarello relaunched Wonder Woman for the “New 52” DC comics reboot. Their work stood out as one of the best new titles to come out of that initiative. Chiang worked on the series, drawing interior art and covers through issue 35 in 2014.
Today, Chiang has solidified himself as one of the most sought after artists & designers working in comics. In addition to drawing covers for the 2nd volume of Ms. Marvel & various other comics, Chiang has launched a new creator-owned comic, Paper Girls, with famed writer Brian K. Vaughan. It has quickly become one of the top-selling titles for Image Comics, joining the likes of Saga, Descender, and The Walking Dead.
