Nicola Scott has been paying her dues for years now, working on such titles as Birds of Prey, Secret Six, and Teen Titans for DC Comics. This week sees the release of the third issue of Black Magick, the creator-owned Image series by Nicola Scott and New York Times best selling author Greg Rucka. Black Magick’s main character, Rowan Black, balances her life as a homicide detective and as a practitioner of the dark arts. The story lends itself perfectly to Scott’s moody, ink-washed drawings.
Nicola Scott began her career in her home-country, Australia, illustrating covers for comics. Her first U.S. comics work was an issue of Star Wars: Empire for Dark Horse. After a decade of working on mainstream/super-hero comics, Scott has finally found her dream project with Black Magick and, as you can see by the examples above, she’s really taking her craft to the next level!
If you hurry, you can still find copies of Black Magick #1-3 at your local comics shop.

The pencil drawing of the little boy and the house is by Colleen Doran.
Thank you for catching that, Tamara! I did get that from Nicola Scott’s twitter, but I missed the @ColleenDoran part. Ugh! Maybe, when her new book with Neil Gaiman comes out, we’ll do an article on her.
She’s got some great work, seen her work for a while now. Good to see her on the Image book.
