   I thinks Hemingway wanted to make a trick with this dream. When the old man dreams with “lions” it means “sea lions”. The real old man is an spanish man from Canary Islands, spanish islands near to Africa. In the seashore of Canary Islands there was sea lions; there is an small island called “Isla de Lobos” between Lanzarote (old man place of born) and Fuerteventura. (lobo = wolf, lobo marino = sea wolf = sea lion)
   Later in the book, he speaks about “sea” lions (at least in spanish version). But it’s normal that if he says “lions playing like cats in Africa” everybody will think about feline lions. :D

   (Sorry for the english mistakes :D I’m spanish, from Fuerteventura, the other island of the sea lions seashore :D)
