Illustrator Sachin Teng

It is easy to look at Sachin Teng’s work and point to influences, like James Jean or Sam Weber. His work is complex in a way that is hard to decode, as an artist, and so the closest we can get to understanding exactly how he created his work is to draw comparisons to artists we already know.

Drawing a comparison to artistic influences is in no way meant to diminish Teng’s message, in fact there is great historical precedence for artists with stylistic differences to carve incredible and unique places in history. David and Ingres, two masters in their own right forever sit side-by-side as teacher and student. Leyendecker and Rockwell were contemporaries and friends. Looking more broadly at phenomena like The Hudson River School, or to illustrators like Rick Berry who have taken great artists like Phil Hale and Jon Foster under his wing, we see how a stylistic influence can serve to spark a unique and compelling body of work.

I think we see with Teng’s work that while it is exciting to identify influencers, it is exciting precisely because he has a voice that is unmistakably his own.

No single image can sum up his portfolio, so you should…
